Winter ain't here yet, but MAN is it cold out!

This is when it gets tough training for a spring marathon.  When the mercury plummets, and stays well below freezing all day.  Those fun summertime morning runs when a t-shirt, shorts, and light socks are distant memories; now it's North Face this and Windshell that, Smartwool socks, tights, etc.  For a 4-mile run.  Four miles!

Also have to start factoring in the "actual" weather, i.e. rain (regular or freezing?), sleet, snow, wind.  Road status if running remotely.  Are shoes dry from the last run?  Need another pair of tights! 

So much for "strap on the shoes and hit the road"!

Man, I've really got to update this blog!

Well, lots of changes since I last posted.  I've been unemployed since mid-August, in very exhaustive job search.  Any real race plans have been tabled for the most part.  I was on a job interview the day Boston opened (and closed) for registration, so was unable to actually use the BQ I earned AT BOSTON!   Bummed about that, so I decided to stay close to home and run Umstead again in 2011.  It was my first marathon back in 2008, and remains my favorite.  So, I want to give it a good run this year and see if I can take a few minutes of the '08 time :)

2011's schedule is shaping up like this:
January - Little River 10-miler
March- Umstead Marathon
May- White Lake Half (and perhaps the sprint next day)
July-Triangle Sprint Triathlon
August-Mayo Lake Sprint Triathlon

I'm sure there are more I'm missing, but looking forward to a fall marathon somewhere.

Pre-race routine:
Up at 4:30 or so, let Lainey sleep until almost 5. Car was loaded up the night before, so I just puttered around. Peanut butter, banana, and honey on whole wheat for breakfast, and a cup of decaf coffee. We hit the road at 5:31 am.

Event warmup:
I had time to do a 4-minute run out of transition, didn't get the normal 10-minute bike in. Oh well. Took a Strawberry/Banana Gu at 7:45. Sipping on Blueberry/Pomegranate GU Brew throughout the morning.


Swim
Comments:
Started on the backline, and just focused on swimming my race, and on swimming on-course. I achieved both of those. Caught a couple of drafts here and there, but moved off as needed. Swam to the best of my current ability, didn't have to make any significant course corrections, sighted about every 12th stroke or so. Caught Alan running up out of the water, so we were pretty much on-par with each other for the swim.



I can't remember a better-feeling swim. Had I not had to navigate around a few frog-kickers, I would've made up a few more spots. Though I was 21/30 AG and 111/153 OA, I thought this was one of my best efforts in a non-wetsuit swim. I can see steady progress if I'll just stick with it. Swimming focus must remain for the rest of the season, through the winter. Need coaching first.

What would you do differently?:
It's time to actually get some lessons, and join masters. It's hard to suck so bad at swimming, then nail the bike and run, EVERY time.

Comments:
I really lost a lot of positions here. I really thought it was a lot quicker than this, but I got bogged down putting on socks, in advance of the trail run that would be coming up after the bike. Looking back, I should've gone shoeless on the bike, and put on the easy-to-pull-on socks (black) just before the run, instead of trying to pull up the Sock Guy socks before the bike. All said, I hit my goal of sub-2:00 on T1.

What would you do differently?:
No socks on the bike, put the socks on before the run.

Comments:
Took an Orange Burst GU when I turned back onto 49/Virgilina Rd. Felt good out of the gate. Right before the race, I swapped to the Vista SLs with the 12-27 cassette still installed. Traded aero for weight. For 75% of the race I was happy with that decision, then came the flat road headwind...

No one passed me for good on the bike. Had one guy at the start who passed me on 2 successive downhills, then I rolled past him on the uphills for good. Another guy that passed me back after I passed him on Mill Creek, then I put him away too.

Caught up to halfpint, who had a fantastic swim, and was working a great bike, out on Mill Creek. He snarled "you and your legs!" as I went by :)

Early on, there was quite a bit of blocking, position fouls, riding left of center...I was calling out "Move right unless you're passing!!" quite a bit at the start. 111th out of the water, and 14th after the bike...not bad.

Took second Gu (Vanilla Bean) with about 3 miles left on the bike.

What would you do differently?:
Race wheels? Aero helmet? More work on flat road headwind power generation? I felt like I worked the hills well.

T2
Comments:
This felt like a very good T2. Breezed in, breezed out. Took a bit to get the shoes off due to the wonky strap on the right shoe, but I got the bike racked, shoes off, helmet off, slid on the Wave Elixirs, grabbed hat, race belt, and water bottle and was gone.

What would you do differently?:
I could've benefitted from my trail shoes. In hindsight, bike sockless, at T2 put on run socks and take the time to put on the trail shoes. Speedlaces in the trail shoes might've worked, but I've never tried them in those shoes, only the Elixirs.

Run
Comments:
I was passed by one 23-yo male early on the run, but aside from that, I was making passes the rest of the way in. 111th on the swim, 14th on the bike, and 9th on the run, means I picked off 5 or so on the run. Fastest AG run, yet one of my slowest sprint runs to date. It was that tough of a course.

What would you do differently?:
Trail shoes, trail shoes, trail shoes. That and yankz/speedlaces.

Post race
Warm down:
None. Greg beat me by 28 seconds. I just walked over and we chatted about our race. Went back to the finishing area and cheered on competitors. Walked down to the 2.5 mile point on the run and cheered on competitors, took a couple of photos. When Lainey came by, I beelined up to the finish for some more photos.

What limited your ability to perform faster:
Swim. Swim. Swim. Same thing as every race. Super-long T1 compared to others. Speedlaces on the run. Correct shoes for the run. Aero helmet, race wheels. More speedwork on the bike (I have not ridden with IOS since last year)

Event comments:
A very nice, small, intimate race. Transition area is a little screwy (it's on a hillside), and I wish they'd assign rack locations, as these free-for-alls get weird with everyone throwing their stuff around. Still, it worked out okay, and I got to race with all my BT buds!! Even got to help a couple of folks who haven't done many with some time-saving tips (tape those Gu packets to the top tube, pre-opened; grab and go!)

Course: Quite rolling. A flat section on the backside, but into a headwind. Fun course, reminded me a lot of Pinehurst. One 39-mph descent.

I clocked the run at 7:20, 7:31, and 7:27 for the 3 miles.

Course: It was a tough course, much like running Company Mill at Umstead than anything else. Started on the shoulder of the road, then merged off to single-track very quickly. Up, down, left, right, repeat. Running in the Elixirs, I really had to be careful of my footing.

Chase run=free fun!!

My good friend and training buddy Paul extended an offer a few months ago for me to join him on a "chase run" that his coach puts on every 4th Tuesday.  The premise is simple: you submit your anticipated time to run a set distance, and do your best to hit that time.  The course is either a 4-mile or 4.75 mile out/back along the Black Creek Greenway near Umstead Park.  I went fairly aggressive with a 30:29 goal (6:25 pace) for this distance.  I have not done any speedwork since before Boston, and I needed to do some, so this was a good excuse for it.

Put in my 30:29, and hoped for the best.  Turns out I would be running with today's run organizer, as that was his goal as well.  GREAAAT....

Paul went with a 31 something, so he went off a bit ahead of Dan and I.  We went off together.  Good strong pace, but still conversational.  We were able to hold a conversation for the first mile.  Got to the first mile in 6:01.  Holey moley, way fast!  Eased off the pace a little, but I started putting a bit of distance on him. 

Got near the turnaround and saw Paul ahead.  He made the u-turn, and we spoke briefly.  I made the turn, and suddenly he was really far away from me :)  He kicked at the turn.  A bit later, I caught him, we exchanged pleasantries, and I motored on.  He locked in behind me for a bit.  I just kept it nice and steady for the 2nd half.  Not familiar with the course, I couldn't remember when the final stretch was.  Fastest runner of the bunch (Tim Meigs, sub 3:00 Boston) came blazing past.  Checks over the shoulder showed that other fast runners were approaching.  Hammer time.  Kicked in about a 400m sprint at the end, and came in at 30:23, six seconds faster than my goal.  Held the rest off.

I was pleased with this run, and really had fun with it.  I really felt good the entire run, even entertained a brief stop at a water fountain at the 3-mile point, but kept on moving.  I look forward to doing this again in late July to see where I am at that point.

Hotter than hot

Man, this week's been a hot one.  Mid to upper 90s every day (it's 99F as I type this, according to my car thermometer).  This means either suck it up and run in the heat (not smart), or try to fit it in early or late.  Run days this week were Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. 

Tuesday was 5.2 miles at lunch (hot!), Thursday was 6 miles early a.m. (not hot, but humid), and Friday was 7 horribly hot and humid miles after work (95F runtime temp). 

Long run this morning was 75F at start, 79F at finish, for 12 miles on the ATT.  After 7 miles, I had to stop and take off my completely soaked shirt in order to continue the run...

Extra amounts of water are required, and it takes a bit to cool down afterwards.  Today's core temp reduction technique; family time at the pool in the afternoon.  The boys are becoming little fish in the water.  I'm hoping some of it rubs off on me!

A week later, 20 degrees cooler, and a better day

I had a tough schedule at work this week, which bunched my run days into Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Wednesday was 7 miles, Friday 8, Saturday a 2.8 mile fun run, and Sunday was a long 11.5+.  My route for Sunday was Old Reedy Creek Road to the bike/bridle trail, then bearing left down Cedar Ridge, across Turkey Creek, then taking South Turkey Creek b/b trail back to Reedy Creek, back to home.  I had a sluggish start (6am after a night of fellowship), but it felt nice out.  Very humid, but nice.  Descending Cedar Ridge, I SO felt like I was in the NC mountains...right here in Wake County.  Such a neat feeling, and varied landscape on that short 1.4 mile descent.  Go run it.  Or walk it, or bike it.  But go see it.

Then forded the creek, turned around, and took in nature's beauty along that creek.  Quite pretty that time of day (just before 7am).  Got back to the task at hand of running up South Turkey.  Just kinda slugging along through here, finally saw another runner on his way towards N. Turkey.  Kept on hoofing it, swatting horseflies ever 15 seconds...

Got up to the water fountain, replenished the Nathan, took a Gu Jet Blackberry, and was on my way.  Headed on down Corkscrew and up to Graylyn/Reedy.  Debated (briefly) adding a trip down to Company Mill, but didn't as I was already behind on time (had to stop for gas on the way to run).  Cemetery for once was not daunting.  I started thinking about riding my bike while running up Cemetery, and time just flew by.  I've also thought about running up Heartbreak Hill at times, which also helps here (I thought about running up Cemetery while running up Heartbreak so turnabout is fair play).

A nice run once it was done, and headed back home to be surprised by my family with a brand-new Keurig single-cup coffeemaker, blueberry pancakes and sausage, and numerous cards and gifts.  Wonderful father's day for me!

Know your limits, and be prepared

Thunderstorms in the area last night kept our dog up, which keeps me up.  It allowed me to update this blog, but it also caused me to not wake up again in time to get in my long run for the week before Church/morning family time.  So, I pushed my run to the afternoon.  1pm, to be precise.  1pm, in 94F, 95% humidity, 100+ heat index, heat.  My route was shaded, and wooded, which is nice, but also not very breezy, and over 1000 feet of climbing.  I have run this route dozens of times before with some variation in pace, but it is usually a manageable, enjoyable run.

Today was just downright brutal.  Normally, I can run this with a 24 oz. hand bottle, topping it off at one (or both) of the water fountains in Umstead.  Today, I ran with my 4-bottle Fuel Belt, 2 Gu gels, and my cell phone.  I never run with my cell phone.

All was good for the first hour or so, until I came upon the steep hill on North Turkey Creek.  Normally, I'm cresting the hill right at the 1 hour mark.  Today, I was quick through the Trenton gate point, but started purposely slowing down on South Turkey Creek, heading towards North Turkey.  When I got to the bottom of the big climb at 1 hour, the wheels started to fall off.  I walked up that hill.  I never walk up that hill.  And it just got worse from then on.

I got back to mile 11.5 or so (the top of Cemetery Hill) when a mountain biker rode past me.  He looked at me as he rode by, said "are you okay?  Do you have enough water?"  I must've REALLY looked bad, because he took the time to ask that as he was climbing that steep-a$$ hill!  I replied that I had a bit left, and that I could make it to the water fountain ahead.  He again offered me his water bottle, and waited for me to crest the hill to offer me again.  That was very thoughtful, and I thought about taking him up on it, but I pressed on. 

When I finally got to the water fountain, I filled up everything I had.  I soaked my head with the garden hose, getting thoroughly soaked head to toe in the process.  My core temp must've been high, as my sweating was slowing down, and I had goose bumps.  I pulled out my cell phone and called Lainey, letting her know that I was well behind pace and struggling, and that I was going to take it extremely easy from there on in.

I covered the last 2 miles at a snail's pace, and by the time I got back to the car, had started sweating again, meaning I had enough water back in me to sweat.

I learned a few things today; 1) I'm too old for this crap.  94+ is nothing to mess around with. 2) Pick an easy course if you must run on a hot day. 3) Take your normal water consumption rate for an 80 degree day and double it for every 10 degrees above that...

Time to think about swimming again...got a true sprint triathlon coming up in 7 weeks or so.  Mayo Lake Sprint, up near Roxboro.

Well, it's been a while...here's a recap


I've been so remiss in keeping this blog up, but I want to try.
So, here's a recap since last year.
My last post was July 2009.  Since then, I've run a few races, and put in quite a few training miles. 
  • October 24, 2009-ATT 10-miler: 1:08:39, a significant improvement over 2008's performance.  2/14 AG, 10/119 overall males, very pleased with that race.
  • November 14, 2009-Running free for K-Wayne 5k (also on the ATT, at the other end): 19:07, 1/10 AG, 4th overall male, so close to breaking 19
  • January 9, 2010-Little River Trail Run 10-miler: 1:20:33 on a tough all-single-track course (on my birthday!).  11/55 AG, 28/277 overall males.  Not my best race, but I was a little sore that day, and it was so cold (16F at race start), that it was just a survival morning.  Fun though!
  • March 21, 2010-Tobacco Road Half Marathon: 1:28:18.  My best half-mary to date, and didn't give it 100% (not with Boston a month later!).  6/50 age group, 25/790 overall males.  A beautiful day, a great race (right on the American Tobacco Trail and surrounding areas.)
  • April 18, 2010-BAA 5k (with Lainey): 30:22 around downtown Boston.  A great running town, and running with my best friend couldn't be beat!
Which brings us to the purpose of the blog (originally) for the past few years:
  • April 19, 2010-114th Annual BAA Boston Marathon: 3:15:09 (yep, BQ'd at Boston).  An absolutely fantastic experience.  Here's the race report from my race log at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/:
Pre-race routine:

Up around 4. Finished prep of my gear, made a cup of coffee, checked email at the business center, then started getting dressed. Out the door at 5:20, met Joanne that we met on the train at WTC T stop. We were at Park station by 5:40, I was on a bus at 5:50, and we were rolling out at 6:05am. Police escort out of town, and we were about the 10th bus in line, so we got to Athlete's Village pretty early, not very busy at all when we arrived. I just took it all in.
For the race, I wore blue C9 shorts, the RaceMenu singlet, GU visor, Tifosi glasses, arm warmers, throwaway black gloves (that I never threw away), antishear socks, Wave Inspire 5s.

Event warmup:
A little stretching under the big tent, and a little jog down to the corrals, but that's about it. I used the first 3 miles or so to warm up.

Monday:

My watch was set for 4:45am, but I was wide awake at 4. The plan was to eat something around 5 (something light), then have "breakfast" at 7 when I got to Hopkinton. I pretty much did that; had a Planters NUTrition bar (that I got at the expo) at 5ish after getting all my gear ready and on.
Prerace prep was bodyglide, put on the shorts, singlet, bodyglide the feet, put on the socks, Mizuno Wave Inspires, then tights, RaceMenu t-shirt, fleece jacket, and Mizuno Breath cap. North Face gloves over glove liners too (it was 38F outside!). I was set and out the door at 5:20, to meet Joanne from Calgary at the T just across the street.

We met up, and took the T to the Park stop, hopped off, and boom-there we were at Boston Common, right where we were to catch the buses. We took photos (me of her and Daren, her of me on the Common), then headed out. I made a portajohn stop in the park, and then hopped on a bus. We were rolling to Hopkinton at 6:06am. Along the way I was drinking my GU Brew (blueberry pomegranate-extra sodium!), and finished it by the time we got to Hopkinton.

By 7am, I was off the bus, and into Athlete's Village. Wow, what an amazing feeling, to be standing there, just 0.7 mile from the start of the FREAKING BOSTON MARATHON!! That is where it really sunk in-I was there, with no real way back home except to run 26.2 miles back to Boston. Unlike every other race I've done that's been a loop back to the start, here I was stranded. It was a very surreal feeling. There were hardbodies everywhere. I can see how this is regarded as the Olympics for Mortals! I felt "important" at this venue. Lainey had commented during packet pickup that she really didn't see that many folks that looked like they didn't run much; everyone brought their A-game. However, I felt completely at ease in this setting. I've done this before, a marathon is just a long run with a 10k on the end, and I was very prepared. I was a bit unsure how my knee was going to like running, but I could not let that get in my head. My body was ready to run.

At the Village, I picked up a banana and a bagel. I ate the banana; I stashed the bagel for later. I drank a cup of Gatorade, and sipped on a bottle of water. I had eaten one mini-bagel with peanut butter upon arrival at the Village; I had the 2nd one a little later, about 8am. I continued to either mill around the Village, or just relax and try to stay warm under one of the big tents. I met 2 guys from Johnston County who had qualified at 2009 City of Oaks! Wow! Then I began to focus on finding my happy place for the morning.

Around 8:50 I found a good portajohn line, and by 9:10 I was done and heading for the baggage buses. Stripped out of my warm clothes and passed the bag into the bus for my bib number. I started heading down towards the start at around 9:25, made another portajohn pit stop on the way, then stopped by one of the locals' houses to borrow a sharpie and write my name on my bib. Kept on walking down the hill, and heard a rumble approaching: FLYBY!! I then started a light jog down to the corral area. I had wrapped myself up in a space blanket, as I was wearing shorts and a singlet with arm warmers, and was a little chilly. I found a convenient trash can to ditch the blanket with about 10 minutes to go before race time, then found my corral and nudged up beside it. Couldn't get "in", so stood alongside, where the volunteers were feeding us in as the crowd moved forward. That turned out to be a great plan; no claustrophobia.

I don't think I've mentioned yet that I planned to run with a camera. I had practiced it during the 5k on Sunday, and it proved to be unobtrusive and fairly easy to manage, so it was a go for Monday. So, as it neared 10am, the mood picked up, everyone was extremely excited (not too serious like those corrals up a little further), and when the gun fired, we were off! for about 10 feet. Then we stopped again. About 30 seconds later it seemed we were moving slowly, and about 2:45 after the gun, I was across the line.

I started out on the right side of the course, and must've high-fived 150 people in the first ¼ mile. I quickly decided that I might not want to do that too much, or I'd dislocate my shoulder! But man was it a rush. Those were FANS! The pack I was with looked like it might settle down pretty quick, but there were still those zigging and zagging across the course. I was determined not to do that, so I spent the first 2-3 miles figuring out where on the road crown my legs liked to be the most. It didn't seem to matter, so I pretty much alternated miles on either side of the crown. I just ran smooth. I was not breathing hard, I was not sweating, nothing hurt, no side stitches, no issues. Just smooth. First 5k in 22:18.

About mile 4, this dude cut across in front of me, and I had to put on the brakes slightly. That made my right knee twinge a bit. It felt about the same way until mile 8, then it was not a problem. The first few miles were just feeling out the course. Some long downhills, with some shorter ascents mixed in to keep the legs alive, but very nice running. Reminded me of running down Olive Chapel Road here in Apex.

All the while, I was happily snapping away photos. Ashland came and went. Framingham, across Lake Cochituate, into Natick, then suddenly we're into Wellesley. I took a GU at mile 6. 10k in 44:51. 15k in 1:07:57.

My plan was to hit a GU at mile 10. But prior to that, I had taken an orange wedge from a little girl who lit up when I took it from her, then I took a red licorice stick from another little girl (same reaction), so my stomach wasn't ready for GU. I held off until mile 12, just before the Scream Tunnel. I was really working nicely during this stage. 20k in 1:30:45.

Came to Wellesley, and told myself I'd stay center or left, and just smile and wave. But the further down we ran, the louder they screamed for us to come over for a kiss. So I just had to oblige this one co-ed who yelled out my bib and pointed. Maybe 5 seconds lost there, but it was all part of the experience. There's a little hill just past Wellesley, and that's when I began to feel that I would have a good day climbing. Through the halfway point in 1:35:43.

There's a nice long downhill at about the 25k mark, just before you cross I-95. I wasn't really flying on the downhills, but when we started back up, I began to see that I was reeling folks in on the climbs. And it felt so good. I just kept the pace steady as I could, and clicked them off. Love to say "on your left" when climbing on a run :). Through 25k in 1:53:32.

Suddenly, we're at mile 17, turning right at the Newton Fire Station. The crowds began to get deeper, and closer, and louder. They began to be my friends, my training partners, my kids, wife, parents, all urging me to hang in there. And I was feeling great.

I kept looking at my watch at the mile splits, and seeing that I was having a great race if I could hang on to it. I had these phantom twinges in my left hamstring that would come and go, but caused me no issues. But I was climbing like a banshee. My lack of homework on the course showed, as I could not remember how many and where the hills were. In my mind, I remembered the number 4, across 4 miles, culminating with Heartbreak at 21. Through 30k in 2:16:37.

Don't get me wrong, the hills were NOT easy. But I was prepared for them with my work in Umstead this season. I was zipping past folks on these hills. On Heartbreak, I was repeating "Cemetery, cemetery, cemetery" all the way up, looking 10 yards ahead and no further (the same thing I do on Cemetery). It was my slowest mile, but also my most fulfilling. Through 35k in 2:40:02.

Here's where it gets downright tough. Lainey and I had agreed that if she wanted to come out on-course to see me, that mile 22 would be the best spot. It'd be a convenient T-stop, and I'd be in a good place after Heartbreak where I could focus on her and not the hill. Also, I had stripped off my arm warmers back about mile 8, and had been carrying them in my right hand since then. I was tired of holding them, and was really looking forward to seeing her, giving her a kiss, and telling her I'd see her at the finish. But, I did not see her. Somehow, a train came past her location right as I passed. I didn't see her, and she didn't see me.

So, I sucked it up, and kept on plugging.

Along about this time is where the carnage was starting to stack up. And it's where my calves were tightening up. I began to take in a little more Gatorade than water. I eased off the pace a tad, but through 25 miles, I had no mile slower than 7:54. Mile 21 was a 7:54, mile 22 a 7:29, 23 a 7:40, 24 a 7:52, 25 a 7:46, and the last 1.2 covered in 9:47. 40k in 3:04:16.

The last few miles in this race were a bit of a blur. The crowds were wild, but the scene on the street was crazier. Bandits were everywhere at this point, and there were folks in bad shape all around me. Guys were stopping to walk all along the way. I'd run by them, touch them on the arm, and say "let's go brother!" I had a couple pick it up, but most just looked at me dumbfounded.

I had tons of motivational energy at this point, as I was still feeling good (albeit cramping), moving forward, and I had a BQ in my hands. If I could just hold on to it, it would be icing on the cake of a perfect race. I was sub 3:30. I was sub 3:20. And I was about to be BQ'd at Boston. How cool would that be?

And then we passed the Citgo sign. I felt good about passing the Citgo sign. And then there was the "1 mile to go" sign. And there was a dude down in the street, in pain, cramped up, with police and EMS around him. And suddenly, we were turning right up Hereford Street, and then left onto Boylston, and there, way down there, was the finish. I could see it. I could feel it. And I could HEAR IT! A glance at the watch sealed the deal. I could almost walk it in from here. But I didn't. I ran it. I ran it strong (not as hard as I could, but strong enough). I separated out a little from the pack, moved to the right, and made sure I finished not like a sardine, but where I wanted to be.

And then I was across the line. I kind of felt like Forrest Gump when he's playing for 'Bama, when the crowd has to yell for him to stop. I don't like stopping at the end of a race: I just wanted to keep running. I crossed the line, and said "Now That's a hard day at the office" and my fellow finishers got a chuckle out of that. Fought the urge to stop the watch upon crossing the line. Waited a few seconds, then looked down, and saw 3:15:11. BQ! Actual chip time was 3:15:09. Gun time was a little more, as I was about 3 minutes off the line at the start.

We moseyed on down the finish chute to get water, Gatorade, a banana, a space blanket, my medal (!), a goodie bag, then on to pick up my clothes bag. I contemplated changing, but I wasn't ready to do that yet. So, I just made my way on over to the Family Meeting Area, under the "B" sign.

And waited. And waited. And waited some more. Lainey was not there. Turns out she was trying her heart out to get there on the T, but the trains were slammed and it took her a long time to get back to Arlington Station. That's where I knew she'd be coming from, so I started walking back toward that station in the most direct line I could muster. Here I am, having just finished running 26.2, and I'm wandering the streets with no cell phone, no money, only a Charlie Ticket and a PowerBar...

...And then there she was. Crying and laughing at the same time, overjoyed to see me. We've had our share of "almost missed connections" in the past, and I'm sure she was afraid this would be one of them. She was so sorry for having missed me. I was so sorry for having missed her. But I was so glad to see her, right then, right there. We celebrated briefly, and then hopped on the T to get back to the hotel. I desperately wanted a hot shower and clean clothes, and to get on our way back home.

Quick shower at the hotel, then of course on goes my race shirt and medal, which I happily wore all the way home. My stomach was feeling a little sour on the way to the airport, and worsened while there, but once I got a Coke in me on the plane, I was much better.

Our return flight was through LaGuardia, and we had the privilege of flying over NYC in the afternoon. I took tons of photos from the window of the plane, it was very neat. We found a nice restaurant where I ordered a tall Blue Moon and a delicious burger with fries. Then it was on to our 2nd leg home. I was very happy with the results of the entire weekend, and still am as I type this 5 days later. What a wonderful experience.

What would you do differently?:
Not have tendonitis, but aside from that, I played the race out smartly. I pushed when I needed to, but for the most part was very relaxed. I was fighting calf cramps, and was afraid to push it any harder, especially with a tight time window that was still present. I don't really think I went out "too" hard, but I wonder if my back half could've been any quicker if the front was slower.

Warm down:
Walk the chute for water, gatorade, banana, blanket, medal, goodie bag, then go find my clothes (which I did not change into at all). Then it was wait, wait, wait for Lainey, who was held up on the T. As time was getting tight for us to be able to make our flights, I started walking towards the station she'd be coming from. Luckily, I ran right into her about 20 steps from the station. She broke down in my arms, and was so sad that she had missed me on-course. I was sad I couldn't see her too, but I told her it made me run harder to make the finish strong for her.

What limited your ability to perform faster:
No long runs over 20. I seem to suffer about mile 22 from calf cramps. There's something missing in my nutrition plan I believe. Possibly more calf-strengthening exercises would be of benefit as well. My quads didn't take too much of a pounding on the front half, so I was still able to handle climbing pretty well on the back half, but my calves were the issue.

Event comments:
It's Boston! What more can be said??? Got a BQ out of it, wasn't looking for it going in, but I had a good first half, running pretty easy, and just felt like I could hang on. I knew I was slowing down after Newton, but I felt good enough (despite calf cramps) to hold on for the finish. Was really just looking for something near a 3:20, heck a sub-3:30 would've been nice, but thrilled with the performance 4/19.
